Cameron Highlands/ Tanah Rata - Volunteering in CH Travellers Inn

This time we were lucky because we got a ride from Ipho to Tanah Rata (Flat Ground) in the Cameron Highlands. The first thing that we realised was the pleasant cool weather up here. Up here means about 1500 meter above sea level. The climate is perfect to grow fruits and vegetables like strawberries, beans, tomatoes, corns and many more. First we were quite overwhelmed with all these vegetable farms because we didn’t expect this up here. Our driver dropped us off somewhere in Tanah Rata. From there we made our way through Tanah Rata to the hostel where we will work for the next 2 weeks.

Haida and Oliver welcomed us in the Orchid Lodge and gave us an introduction for the next 2 weeks. In the CH Travellers Inn we met our 2 charming colleges Stephen and Alias. Alias is local and Stephen an English gentleman. Today we had nothing to do and so we walked to the downtown of Tanah Rata which took us about two minutes. I think you could walk through whole Tanah Rata within 10 minutes. The main street were filled with restaurants and little shops. Back in the hostel we met our boss Hisham who is a really nice guy. He showed us all the important stuff but the most things we will learn as we are working.

Our job in the hostel was to make the beds, checking in and out the backpackers, writing emails, taking phone calls and trying not to burn the hostel down. This all is just a preparation for us because Stephen, Ines and I should run the hostel for one week by ourselves. The reason were Ramadan and Hari Raya. Ramadan is the fasting time for Muslims which takes one month. No food and drinks from sunrise to sunset. Hari Raya is the first day of eating. Many people are celebrating this with family and friends. It is like Christmas in the Western countries. The owners said goodbye to us and from now on we were in charge of the CH TRAVELLERS INN. Hopefully things will going well.

We got loads of fun and sometimes a lot of stress in this week. Beds aren’t doing the job by itself. Pity. Additional we had to improvise a few times. Especially when guests are walking in and saying “We have a reservation under…” and you are answering “Unfortunately all beds are full”. In this moment we gave our room to the guests and we stayed altogether in the tiny office. What a fun. The Fantastic 3 were successful during this week and every guest was more and less satisfied. After the job was done we mostly hang around in the Jungle Bar, playing pool and discussing about the meaning of life. Last mentioned we didn’t find any answers.

The biggest contrasts were to leave the hostel and doing one of the walks in the jungle. The trails are just 10 minutes away from town and a good place for tourists and locals to relaxe. No noise and exhaust gas from cars were a good treatment for our body and mind. After 2 or 3 hours we had to leave paradise and entering the real world again. The hostel is calling.

We worked for two weeks in a row and had 3 days off afterwards. We still could stay in the hostel during these days without paying for the room. Stephen, Ines and I were on fire for jungle trekking. After this we wanted to visit another tee plantation. 7 km was to far for walking and so we used our thumb again. Within 5 minutes a car stopped, seconds later we sat on the back of the pick up and met some very friendly people. Unfortunately, the plantation was closed. How disappointing would it be if we would walk all the way to here. On our way home the driver asked us if we would like to see some vegetable farms. We agreed and got some very good impressions. We ate sweet corn from the plantation, we picked onions with locals, got a lot information about the work and the farms and saw the homes from the workers which was deep in the jungle. What for a crazy day.

Nearly 3 weeks after we arrived here, it felt like a second home again. It was a little bit sad to leave all these amazing people here but I’m so thankful for these experience especially to run a hostel for one week. Thanks Haida, Ibrahim, Hisham, Alias, Anni, Stephen (Hamster), Oliver (Flower) and Eddy (the owner of the jungle bar) for these memorable days. Please fasten your seat belts. Next destination “MELAKA”

Georgetown/ Penang

The master plan was to hitch hike to Georgetown on Penang. No chance at all. It was impossible to get out of Kuala Lumpur. Just out of curiosity, we asked for the price via train to Georgetown which was about 350 km north. We did’t need to think twice for a 20 MYR-ticket (5 Euros). The cost of food during our try to hitch hike would be at least the same price. So we took the offer and spend the last few hours at the train station with some young local people. One of them was so excited that he wanted a photo with us. “When I’m older I want to travel like you guys.”, he said. After a little delay we started our 7 hours journey in a 10 degree celsius trailer. Yes, you did hear right. It was really that cold. We didn’t understand this at all. The only gate way spot was between the trailers where also the doors are. But unfortunately we weren’t alone because everyone liked to be in that warm place. Tired and hypothermic we arrived at Georgetown in the early morning. There wasn’t any opportunity to go to bed because we had to wait another 3 hours until the hostel will have open. During that time Ines took a nap and I went for a little walk around Georgetown.

In 2008, Georgetown was declared as a world heritage site by Unesco and should be interesting to everyone who likes food from all over the world, old buildings, history and street art. Last named we attacked it in the next morning. Armed with a map, camera and lots of vigour we started to comb the streets. “Comb the desert!” Best quote ever. The paintings are unique and welcome everyone to interact with them. Take a seat on a swing next to another, where little kids are laughing about you or place your butt on a luggage carrier and pretend to take a bike tour with kids through Georgetown. These are just two from many which are spread out all over the inner city. And if you get hungry the next kitchen chef is not far away. It doesn’t matter if you pick Muslim, Chinese, Thai or Indian food. Everything is damn delicious. After 2 days we found our two favourite restaurants. Woodlands and Thalia NR Sweet. Both offer vegetarian food, taste very good and it is pretty cheap. Don’t be afraid if you read “Chicken”. It isn’t meat at all. On my first meal I doubted that it would be vegetarian. But it was. So delicious!!!

4 days in town were more than enough. It was time to discover the island. We took the bus 101 and went to the end station, where the national park from Penang is. Right after our arrival it started to rain which was very appreciating in this hot weather. We filled out a form at the entrance and were ready to go into the forest. After a few hundred meter we turned left and left the main touristic path. When we read the sign “hill” we were on fire to do this. 10 steep ups and downs and as a reward we got no view at the end. Bummer and a deja vu. Bad memories from the Herikino Forest in New Zealand popped up in my mind again. These thoughts were gone as we reached the Turtle Beach. Here we could watch little and big turtles in the Sanctuary for turtles. Except of turtles we also saw a snake, a nice frog and a big lizard. It was really exciting.

On our day before the very last one we went by bus to the Kok Lok Si temple, which is apparently the biggest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the temple has the appearance of a shopping mall. Lots of huge souvenir shops took every magic and beauty from this place. Of course it is still amazing. Quite honestly, one shop would be definitely enough. We didn’t come for shopping. With an elevator we made our way up to the next floor. Here, a big statue welcomed us and additional we got a very nice view all over Georgetown.

All together we spend about 9 days in Georgetown. I think 5 days would be enough for this town. But the food was so damn delicious. We said goodbye to the owners from the Cocoa Hostel and took the ferry to Butterworth in the evening. From here we are going to Ipho and further to the Cameron Highlands. There we are starting our second job as volunteers in a hostel. We are already very excited and looking forward to that place. Especially hiking and the mild temperature in the highlands make us happy. No sweat from doing nothing anymore.

Welcome to Yellow House in Kuala Lumpur

It was already after midnight when we arrived in Kuala Lumpur by bus. There was no public transport at this time and so we had to take the taxi to Ampang. Don’t use a taxi after 12 p.m. because it’s damn expensive. Our only aim was the cosy bed in the hostel. The last kilometres we had to lead the taxi driver to our destination. He asked us 3 times if it would be the right address and we agreed all the time. Maybe he wasn’t used to drive European to this part of the city at this time. We said thank you and tried to find the hostel. A few steps later, we weren’t sure anymore if we are in the right place. Suddenly we heard some chatter and laughing which made us happy again. They welcomed us very friend and we did our first steps in the Yellow House where we will stay to weeks.

The Yellow House isn’t just a normal hostel. It’s more a community of backpackers who are helping out in the house and the garden. Next to daily tasked like housekeeping, there were also special projects. Our was it to built a new wall made from recycled material such as glass bottles and used bricks. This project turned into something big. Much bigger than expected. Our time schedule was very small but everybody gave a hand. We dug a big hole, removed the old shitty wall, set up new columns, placed the bricks and concreted all over. We didn’t finished the project but the most was done.

On our free days off, we visited the inner city from Kuala Lumpur. It took a while to find orientation. We wandered along the streets and our necks got stiff from looking up to the skyscrapers. The KL Tower and the Petronas Towers represents Kuala Lumpur. Especially at night, these buildings are worth a look. We also visited China Town. Loads of people walked from left to right through the narrow alleys and we had to pay attention not to be caught by salespersons. They are a little bit more aggressive here. Even if you don’t buy what you looked at, the salesperson would follow you the next 50 meters to try to sell it. After a long day spending hours walking around, our feet got tired. We liked to go home but the police officer didn’t agreed with our idea. Why? Because of J-Walking (Crossing the road not at the traffic light) which was really ridiculous. Everybody is doing this in Asia. He wanted to fine us with 300 MYR each but this time we did’t agreed either. We starred discussing for the next 20 minutes. We never used “PLEASE” so many times. He asked us if we are married and so we said “No”. And suddenly he asked us to invite him for a beer at midnight to forget the ticket. What the hell!!! We didn’t give up and discussed a few minutes and finally he released us without a fine. What did we learn from it? “Talking can make you tired.”

In the Yellow House, we got the opportunity to give some magic to other people. In the soup kitchen we chopped vegetables, fried chicken and cooked noodles for homeless people. This isn’t normal for these people. Every single “Thank you” made us feel much better. In the swimming pool we had a lot fun with these awesome disabled people. Fun was priority and also a good refreshment during the hot day. With refugees from Afghanistan we did a little bit more sport. These kids got a lot of energy which made us feel like old fellows. At last, we pretended to be hairdressers for homeless people. Cutting, washing and drying till after midnight. I think that Yellow House is an awesome idea to make the world a little bit better. Thanks to Shyam who showed us these side.

Also 2 weeks will end in some point. We met in this time so many nice people, got a lot of fun, learned much about culture and food and gave some people something back. Our experience during that time increased and we are so thankful for that. Everyone who will go to Kuala Lumpur should visit the Yellow House. You will be welcome as volunteer or just as a guest.

Krabi, Koh Lanta und Koh Phi Phi - Thailand's West coast

Close to Krabi, I took a look outside of the bus and couldn’t believe where I am. I felt like stuck as an actor in the movie “Avatar”. Everywhere, steep green overgrown rocks reached up to the sky which is typical for Thailand. I doubted that they would be there after one day. But they did. I met Ines in Krabi Town again, but first of all we went to the food market. Fruit shakes, exotic fruits, fried noodles and rice, delicious curry, fried vegetables and heaps more were sold by many small food stalls. One highlight was also the big night market on friday. The narrow alleys were filled with people, everywhere it smelled after fresh made food, lots of outfits for a low price you can find here, souvenirs from Thailand were sold in every corner und on the stage, break dancers, musicians and dancers tried to entertain the crowd.

Highway to hell
With the scooter we went to the Tiger Cave Temple nearby Krabi. But just to take the motorcycle wasn’t enough. The actual temple is 1260 steps higher and who is thinking that every single step is similar to the next one, he or she’s wrong. The smallest wasn’t really a step and for the biggest one, we had to jump to get over the almost 50 centimetre step. Also we as tourists were in the minority. Gangs of monkeys tried to scare the shit out of everybody. Don’t drop anything because you will definitely lose it. Every effort to get it again, it will be answered with a loud hiss. After 2 litre sweat less and 1260 steps higher, we reached the summit where we could find a big golden Buddha statue.

We already knew about the Railay Beach because almost every Tuk-Tuk or taxi driver asked us if we need a ride to that place. Instead of taking a taxi, we rented the scooter again for one day and followed the road which leads us along the steep rocks to this beach. It is paradise for rock climbers. But if you don’t like rock climbing than you can also take a sunbath on the beach and watching little monkeys.

National park on Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta was another island on our bucket list. Everybody who likes parties should avoid this place. Here are just a few people in the low session which gives the locals the opportunity to have vacation or to build some more bungalows. Our discovery started with a tour to the Southern point from the island to a small national park. There, we walked along a small natural trail which was over after one hour. We didn’t know that stairs and steps are natural. Some other very nice places were Old Town on the other side and the Tiger Cave, which we couldn’t find.

If you like the movie “the beach” than you should definitely go to Koh Phi Phi. The small island “Koh Phi Leh” was the scenery for that movie. But this was not the reason for us to come here. We wanted to visit another place which is below the surface and completely different. The reef was very healthy what I didn’t expect. We also did a kaiak tour to 2 different beaches. On our way back, the wind got stronger and we got this brillant idea to make a sail. It worked pretty well and everybody was cheering during they passed us. But one hard gust and we lost our balance. We felt into the water with all of our belongings. During Ines collected everything that swim on the surface, I chased the kaiak down. No chance at all. The wind was to strong and pushed the kayak a way to fast. Some friendly guys with a long tail boat picked us up. They are maybe still laughing about the 2 stupid tourists.

Travelling is very exhausting but lots of people will not understand this. We applied as a volunteer in a hostel in Kuala Lumpur/ Malaysia and were approved. The Yellow House, so its named, is not a normal hostel. It’s more like a community which works together all the time. Additional, the people are helping out disabled kids and adults and also homeless people. We will see how it is.
